Louis F. Lumaghi III (“Lou”) of Ormond Beach, Florida passed away on February 27, 2024 at the age of 86. He was born on May 26, 1937 in St. Louis, Missouri, the eldest of six children of Louis F. Lumaghi Jr. and Katherine O’Neil Boyd. After graduation from St. Louis University High School, Lou entered the Seminary of The Society of Jesus and left the Order after 13 years to complete his Doctorate in Medieval History at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Lou subsequently taught for 30 years for the University of Maryland in their Overseas Program, living in Nuremberg, Germany teaching History and Philosophy courses at Maryland campuses throughout Europe. He met Ingrid Meinerat and they married in Verona, Italy and upon his retirement from teaching, they moved to Ormond Beach, Florida.
In his retirement years, Lou delighted in exercising his love of history by researching the early Spanish settlements in Florida and he became deeply involved with local campaigns to curb overdevelopment of the seacoast in his town of Ormond Beach. A dedicated fly fisherman, he fished both coastal Florida waters and the pond behind his house. He was an active and committed parishioner of Star of the Sea Catholic Church.
A kind, sweet, gentle man, Lou was loved by both family and friends and was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Infant Joseph O’Neil Lumaghi of St. Louis, Missouri, sister Kate Lumaghi Clifford of Rye Beach, New Hampshire and his brother Peter Lumaghi of St. Louis,Missouri and is survived by his wife Ingrid to whom he was devoted, his brother Dick (wife Bonnie) of San Francisco, California and his sister Ann (husband Rick) of Waynesville, North Carolina and many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Benton House of Port Orange, Florida and Halifax Hospice of Daytona Beach, Florida for their loving care of Lou in the last year of his life.
