Janet O'Bryant

The Overseas Marylanders Association has learned that Janet O'Bryant, a faculty member in the Kaiserslautern area during the 1980s and 90s, passed away.  Janet, who earned a B.A. at Southwestern Tennessee State University and an M.A. at Vanderbilt University, taught English and speech.  Mississippi Press published the following obituary.

Janet F. O'Bryant
May 3, 1947 - Nov. 24, 2022

Janet F. O'Bryant of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, formerly of Pascagoula, died on November 24, 2022,at age 75. 

During her life Janet worked as a teacher, a legal secretary, and an editor.  She was known for her keen sense of social justice, her stellar sense of humor, her love of language, literature, talking, chocolate, ice cream, and all things concerning Elvis and Queen Elizabeth II.  She traveled widely through Europe and visited libraries, creperies and gelaterias everywhere she went.  Even in illness she loved to laugh, and her many correspondents relied on her for the best cartoons.  

Janet was preceded in death by her parents James Edward and Catherine McKee O'Bryant of Springfield, Missouri and by her brothers James Edward, II and David O'Bryant.  She is survived by her husband Bernard Gautier and his children Bern Gautier (Valerie), Elise Gautier, Ysonde Jensen (Peter), and Adrienne Gautier (Howard Baer); her stepchildren Graham (Christine) and Allison Wilkes; her sister Katie O'Bryant (Ted Bonar); nieces and nephews; and step grandchildren.  

The family thankfully acknowledges the devoted and loving caregiving provided by her friend Christine Wallace, the staff at Truewood by Merrill in Ocean Springs, and the staff of Notre Dame Hospice.  In accordance with her wishes, there will be no memorial service.  Contributions may be made to Feeding the Gulf Coast or the liberal cause of your choosing.
