______________________________________

Mr. Bernard Gautier
December 16, 1933 – December 10, 2022

Henry Bernard Gautier, Sr., formerly of Pascagoula, died on December 10, 2022, at age 88.

For most of his career Bernard worked as a criminal defense attorney and as a public defender.  He was a staunch opponent of the death penalty and often worked pro bono for those serving sentences on death row. Bernard loved to travel and lived in Europe for a number of years.  He enjoyed opera, the New York Giants, dancing and a fine meal.

Bernard was preceded in death by his beloved wife Janet F. O'Bryant, who passed away on November 24, 2022. In addition, he was preceded in death by his parents, Harold White Gautier, Sr. and Pearl "Billie" (Gessman) Gautier of Pascagoula and by his four siblings:  Harold White Gautier, Jr., Mary Gautier Mahaffey, Helen Gautier Wilkinson, and Jean Gautier Richardson.  Bernard is survived by his four children: Bern Gautier (Valerie), Elise Gautier, Ysonde Gautier Jensen (Peter), and Adrienne Gautier (Howard Baer), his seven grandchildren and twenty-one nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the dedicated staff at Truewood by Merrill in Ocean Springs for his care over the last few years, as well as those at River Chase who cared for Bernard in his last month.  Bernard’s children want to especially thank his nieces and nephews who provided much love and care to him and Janet in their final years: Veronica Milstead (Rick); Carolyn, Sarah, and Suzanne Gautier; and Robert Richardson (Cathy).

In accordance with his wishes, there will be no memorial service.  Contributions may be made to the liberal cause of your choosing.

Bernard and I taught together in the Kaiserslautern /Ramstein area  in the 1980's and 90's. He was a lawyer by profession but also had a history degree and brought a keen legal eye to that discipline.  He was a valued member of our very large faculty there. Ron Schlundt
